When Your Hair Isn’t Perfect the First Time (Let’s Talk About It)

Hey lovely clients — Stef here. I want to talk about something important.

I’ve worked in the salon and spa world since 2005, in pretty much every role you can imagine — front desk, service provider, director… the whole tour. And when you’ve been around this industry long enough, you start noticing patterns. Today we’re going to discuss the nervous, post salon visit phone call that starts with,

“I hate to be difficult… I didn’t want to cause a scene… but I don’t love my hair.”

More often than not, that client is hesitant to come back because they’re worried their stylist will be upset, or that things will feel awkward. So today, I want to set the record straight — because this is something every client deserves to understand.

We are highly trained. We are artists. We are professionals. We are human.

STORY TIME!

Recently at Katie Blue Salon, a new guest came in for a major color transformation. She brought multiple inspiration photos. Different tones. Different depths. Different root situations. She wasn’t 100% sure what she wanted — just that she wanted something new.

Her colorist did what she always does: she listened carefully, studied the photos, and executed the look that best matched what was communicated.

And technically?
It matched one of the inspiration photos perfectly.

As an apprentice, I often do the blow dry for the clients and I could feel it.

That subtle shift. That quiet energy. That polite smile that doesn’t quite reach the eyes.

At the end of the appointment she thanked us. And I said gently,

“I can tell you don’t love it — it’s okay. Let’s talk about it.”

And here’s the thing most clients don’t realize: We WANT you to say something.

I sat her back down. I asked her to tell me:

  • What do you like about it?

  • What feels off?

  • What were you hoping to see when you looked in the mirror?

That’s when it became clear.

She didn’t dislike the work, but the blonde was brighter than she expected.
She needed:

  • A darker toner

  • A softer, more natural transition from roots to ends

Totally reasonable adjustments. Totally fixable.

She had already been in the chair for four hours and needed to go, so we booked her back in a few days later.

Round two?

BINGO.

You could see it on her face before she even spoke. That glow. That relaxed smile. That yes, this is it energy.

And that’s the whole point of this story.

Hair is chemistry. It’s art. It’s interpretation.
And when there are multiple inspiration photos involved & two brains potentially seeing different tones & color variants: There’s room for nuance.

Sometimes we hit the bullseye on the first throw.
Sometimes we need to recalibrate.

That doesn’t mean your stylist isn’t talented. It means we’re collaborating.

Please Speak Up

We know it’s uncomfortable — especially with someone you just met.

You don’t want to hurt feelings.
You don’t want to seem difficult.
You don’t want to be “that client.”

But staying quiet helps no one.

If something feels off, tell us. Kindly. Clearly. Honestly.

At Katie Blue, we are not satisfied until you are.

And if you give your (very human) stylist the opportunity to adjust, refine, and perfect?

Magic happens.

Sometimes the second round is the one that makes you fall in love.

If you’ve ever walked out of a salon unsure but didn’t say anything — consider this your permission slip.

We can handle it.
We want to hear it.
And we will always do our best to make it right. ✨

Thanks for reading & thanks for your trust!

ROUND ONE: The initial platinum ended up brighter than our client envisioned — and we agreed it needed refinement. Because of previous color history, there was some underlying warmth at the root that couldn’t be fully corrected in a single visit. Although the tone aligned with one of her inspiration photos, the toner didn’t settle as richly as planned, so the blonde appeared a bit more fresh and unfiltered than we wanted.

ROUND TWO: BINGO! We refined the look with a much softer transition from root to ends. Although our client initially preferred to keep her root natural, she later found new inspiration that featured a more seamless blend.

The adjustment was simple and strategic — a root smudge paired with a slightly deeper toner — and in just one hour, we achieved the dimension and softness she was looking for.

You may still notice a subtle warmth where the root blends into the lighter sections. When lifting through old, darker color, some residual warmth can be inevitable in the first round. The good news? With gradual refinement, we can continue cooling and perfecting the tone — and we will never push the hair past what’s healthy to get there.
